Teaching Kids about Race
Teaching kids their numbers can be a piece of cake. Showing them how to say the alphabet and write their name might be easy too. But will you know what to say when your daughter asks why some of her playmates have different colored skin than her own? What if your son overhears a racial slur and asks you what it means? What will you do if your children absorb stereotypical ideas from their classmates – or even other family members? Many of us are not comfortable with our own perceptions and feelings about race, so how can we learn to nurture racial awareness and sensitivity in our kids? Join us this Wednesday to learn more, in a conversation on talking tokids about race.
