Pool Shuttle Costing More Than $100 Per Rider

After five of Louisville’s public swimming pools were not opened for the summer because of a tight budget and maintenance needs,  Metro Government began offering a free shuttle to its open pools. But the shuttle has been lightly used and its cost-effectiveness is being evaluated.To address complaints about the pool closures, the city began offering the free shuttle to open pools on May 24th. But no one rode it until after May 28,  and since then, only 22 swimmers have used the service, which is estimated to cost about $1,000 a week, and more on holiday weekends.So far, the city has spent more than $100 per rider for the shuttle. Officials had estimated it would cost $36 and $72 dollars per patron,  respectively, to reopen the Breslin and Shelby Park pools this summer.The shuttle service may be adjusted to cut costs.“If we find that – for example – one pool, maybe Shelby pool still has several people that still want to go every day, perhaps we would go to one pool or two pools where we have consistent pickups and just do it that way," said mayor's spokesperson Kerri Richardson.Meanwhile, some private groups have been raising money in an effort to re-open the Breslin and Shelby Park pools.
