Beshear Signs Holocaust Education Measure

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has signed into law a resolution that requires the development of a Holocaust education curriculum that can be used by Kentucky's public schools."The measure cleared the 2008 General Assembly after three years of lobbying by students from Louisville's St. Francis of Assisi School, led by teacher Fred Whitaker, whose instruction to eighth-graders includes a lesson on the Nazi atrocities and other genocides."There was something deep inside of them and deep inside of me. We knew we had to continue. and there is an eternal lesson of perserverance when the cause is good and just," Whitaker said.Governor Beshear signed the measure during a ceremony at St. Francis of Assisi Church, attended by students, members of Louisville's Jewish community and some state lawmakers.A Holocaust curriculum will be developed by the state education department.
