Environmental Cabinet Preps Earth Day Plans

The 39th annual Earth Day observance is Tuesday, and the Kentucky Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet is using the occasion to encourage conservation and recycling. In addition to hosting seminars on water and electricity conservation, the cabinet is handing out ‘crumb rubber grants.’ That’s about $1 million that’s distributed to schools to help them buy the playground protective surface madeof shredded tires.“When people buy new tires the retail stores charge a dollar for every tire that they recycle and it goes into the waste tire fund and this money actually goes back out in grants for crumb rubber activities," says cabinet spokesperson Ricki Gardenhire. The cabinet’s Environmental Quality Commission will also hand out its annual Earth Day awards tomorrow in Frankfort.

Gabe Bullard is the director of news and editorial strategy.
