School Board Discusses New Assignment Plan

At its regular meeting Monday night, the Jefferson County Board of Education heard the results of a community survey concerning the district’s proposed new student assignment plan. The board is considering two versions of a new plan following last year’s U.S Supreme Court ruling in which the previous desegregation policy was declared unconstitutional. Superintendent Sheldon Berman called the results ‘an affirmation’ of the board’s guiding principles that were approved last year – which outlined school choice and diversity as high priorities for the district. Berman says officials have made some minor changes to the proposals."What we tried to do is take as much as the feedback as we could and tried to adjust the plan so it would accommodate the most people," said Berman. Those changes include reducing the number of school clusters from seven to six. The board is scheduled to vote on a new plan at its May 12th meeting.
