The Louisville Ballet has announced its 2008-2009 season, which includes a grand finale. The Louisville Ballet’s new season ends with a world premiere featuring a performance by Louisville native and New York City Ballet dancer Wendy Whelan. The piece will be set to Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” and choreographed by Adam Hougland, the company’s principal choreographer.Louisville Ballet artistic director Bruce Simpson says the goal in creating this work is having Whelan work closely with the company."What we really wanted to try to achieve was a set of circumstances or a situation where something was being created while she was here," Simpson says. "And Adam and I and Wendy thought this would be the perfect vehicle — “Rite of Spring."Whelan danced with the company in 2003 and in 2006. The season opens with “The Great Gatsby.”
