Metro Council Approves Library Bonds

The Louisville Metro Council has allocated the first public funds for library expansion in more than two years. The council unanimously approved a $2.5 million bond issue for libraries. They want the money to go to designing new libraries and making plans for expanding or renovating existing facilities.Mayor Jerry Abramson calls the move an incremental step toward finding more money for following through on those plans. He also says operational costs need to be figured in to new plans.“For every neighborhood library that would be built new, it would cost a million to a million and a quarter in operating expenses," says AbramsonThe Metro Council is now asking the Library Advisory Commission to produce a scaled-back master plan for library expansion. Earlier this month the council outlined an expansion plan that would call for 80 million dollars in bonds.
