Bidding Continues For Backup Helicopter

The City of Louisville is still taking bids for its backup police helicopter.Last month Mayor Jerry Abramson decided to sell the helicopter to generate revenue for the city. It’s now listed in an online auction. The helicopter is still being used while it’s up for sale, since the department’s primary helicopter is being repaired in Arizona. It was damaged during a training exercise in August 2006.Assistant Police Chief Tim Emington says it’s important for cities the size of Louisville to have at least one police chopper.“Several years ago in the county we had a problem with rooftop burglaries. They knew patrol cars were going around the perimeter of the building but they couldn’t see on top so once people got on top they just broke through the roof to do their break-in. Those are the types of things we use a helicopter to prevent and patrol," he says. The bidding on the backup helicopter ends in April. Emington predicts the repair work on the primary helicopter will be finished within a few months. He says in the meantime, the department has access to a National Guard
