Secretaries of State Propose New Primary System

The National Association of Secretaries of State is urging political party leaders to adopt its proposal to revamp the presidential primary process.The group has developed a plan aimed at preventing the so-called frontloading of primaries early in an election year. Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is the association’s president.“We proposed dividing the country into 4 in terms of regions,” says Association President and Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita. “Every four years a different region of the country would go first in their primary to select a president. That would start in March and then the next group would go in April followed by May and finally June.”Rokita says the plan would give candidates more time to spend in each region, which would cut down on travel expenses and make running for president more affordable. He says the proposal has strong support among his colleagues, including Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson.
