Jefferson County schools react to beef recall

The Jefferson County school district is throwing out thousands of pounds of beef following a recall by the federal government, and more than a dozen other Kentucky districts are also discarding their supplies.The meat was recalled because of reports that cows that were unable to walk were put into the food supply at a California slaughterhouse. Those cows aren’t supposed to be processed because they are at higher risk for contamination. Meat from the slaughterhouse made it to at least 17 school districts in the Commonwealth.But Kentucky Department of Agriculture spokesperson Bill Clary says there’s little chance the beef posed a health risk.“This is, for the most part, a precautionary procedure,” Clary says. “There is no indication there’s anything wrong with the product itself.”The recall was ordered Sunday by the US Department of Agriculture.
