Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness: “It’s my sixth grader fantasies coming to life”

Jonathan Van Ness

Jonathan Van Ness on Getting Curious, Gymnastics, and Haircare Dreams

Jonathan Van Ness is living the dream – and it’s not just about fabulous hair. The Queer Eye star’s latest project, Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, has moved from podcast to Netflix series, giving audiences a look into JVN’s endless curiosity about, well, everything. From bugs to binary to skyscrapers, each episode is a deep dive into topics that surprise and inspire.

What makes Getting Curious stand out is how it takes simple questions and turns them into profound discussions. Jonathan admits that the goal wasn’t to change the world – it was just to ask the questions they were most curious about. But as it turns out, asking the right questions often reveals some major societal issues. “You can’t tell those stories without touching on how government intersects with them,” JVN says, pointing to episodes on gender identity and the hidden impact of skyscrapers.

The show’s playful spirit is backed by catchy musical numbers that add a layer of fun – including the instant hit “Windows Kill Birds.” Turns out, those tunes are the work of some of Jonathan’s closest friends, who knew exactly how to match that quirky, curious energy. JVN calls it a collaborative effort: “I knew the vibe I wanted, but I’m not a great songwriter, so I had to bring in my friends.”

In addition to the show, Jonathan is taking that same curiosity and joy on the road with their new stand-up tour, Imaginary Living Room Olympian. Kicking off with an actual gymnastics routine (because why not?), the show promises comedy, storytelling, and a whole lot of JVN flair. “It’s my sixth grader fantasies coming to life,” Jonathan laughs. Performing at legendary spots like Radio City Music Hall is just icing on the cake.

But that’s not all. JVN’s also got a new book coming out called Love That Story: Observations from a Gorgeously Queer Life, along with a haircare line that brings salon-quality vibes to your daily routine. Add to that the ongoing podcast and a new season of Queer Eye – it’s safe to say JVN is keeping busy.

Whether it’s curiosity, comedy, or just showing people how to love their hair a little more, Jonathan Van Ness is bringing light and laughter to everything they do. And in a world that could use a bit more of both, it’s exactly what we need.
