In 1965, Roger Waters (born George Roger Waters) co-founded Pink Floyd with drummer Nick Mason, keyboardist Rick Wright and guitarist, singer, and songwriter Syd Barrett. In the wake of Barrett's departure due to mental illness, guitarist David Gilmour joined the band, and Waters emerged as the band's primary songwriter, lyricist, conceptual leader, and driving force behind such albums as Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. It's this stretch of '70s albums -- each one nearly symphonic in its reach -- that established him as a distinctive, idiosyncratic voice within rock. Following his departure from Floyd in 1983, he continued his career with solo albums: Pro's And Con's Of Hitchhiking, Radio K.A.O.S. and Amused To Death. He unsuccessfully sued Gilmour and the other members of the band in the late '80s who wanted to carry on with the name. Waters then capitalized on the enduring popularity of his old band by staging live revivals of Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall in their entirety. Roger Waters celebrates his 73rd birthday on Tuesday (9/6) and we join in the festivities as he's our Tuesday Featured Artist!
