AMPed Up for May 29th!

On May 29th at Headliners Music Hall, there will be a benefit for The Academy of Music Production Education and Development, also known as AMPed. AMPed is a great organization helping kids and teens through the power of music. We talked with Executive Director of AMPed, Dave Christopher, about the event and what AMPed does for our community.

WFPK: Hi Dave. What is the Academy of Music Production Education and Development (AMPed) and who is it for?
Dave Christopher: A music program that focuses on youth and aims to provide a safe environment for youth to explore their creativity through music. It is for youth 11 to 17 years old.

WFPK: How have you seen it affect the community so far?
DC: In a pretty amazing way. We have received a tremendous amount of support and partnerships from other youth groups as well as other social change organizations. The arts community has welcomed us with open arms. The response that the the AMPED kids have received has been life changing. Grades, self esteem, confidence, and trust are just a few things that come to mind. These kids are growing right before my eyes. They are on positive paths and I am so proud of them all.

WFPK: Where do you all get your equipment, instruments and do people volunteer their expertise to teach the kids these skills?
DC: Actually, it's funny that you ask that because to my knowledge we have received some instruments from a the program that you all have (Instrumental Partners Program). Others have donated instruments as well, and we have of course purchased some of our own. We also have local musicians and students from the U of L music school that volunteer their time. We even have non musicians come in and help out.

WFPK: The event at Headliners on May 29th has James Lindsey (formerly Jalin Roze) as one of the performers. How did James become a part of the event and who else can we expect to see there?
DC: James wanted to perform but unfortunately contractual obligations make that not possible at this time. However he will be there and helping us out as a host. James has been a big supporter since the beginning; almost two years ago. He helped with our summer camp, IdeaFestival, and at a workshop at the Newburg Boys and Girls Club. Of course our AMPED kids will be performing along with ChelleLynae, Sasha Renee, T@y All D@y, DJ Colossus, DJ Nerd Boi, Nakya Brook, Sincere, Love Beverly, and DAVE. Ben Sollee might do a cameo for us. He wanted to be there but has a prior engagement. He teaches strings for us.

WFPK: How can people become more involved in AMPed?
DC: To become more involved email us at ampedlouisville@gmail.com or go to our website www.ampedlouisville.org and click on volunteer.

Laura is the afternoon host from 3-6 pm weekdays. Email Laura at lshine@lpm.org
