Today on the Paws Report at 3:30 meet Samson and Gregory and brace yourself for serious cuteness overload! Listen too, for the heartwarming story that could have been more tragic were it not for an unlikely hero:
February 10, 2016, was no normal day for a Louisville garbage collector. Working his route on this freezing morning, he saw what he thought was a bin of stuffed toys. But what Gregory Curry (pictured below) of Rumpke Waste & Recycling discovered was heartbreaking. Four young puppies had been left to die in a plastic bin next to the dumpster in subzero temperatures - thrown away like they were garbage. Sadly, two of the puppies did not survive. The two living puppies were soaked in urine, shaking and clearly distressed. Gregory quickly scooped up the helpless puppies and put them in the cab of his truck, working to warm their small, cold bodies. Knowing they would need special care, he brought them to the Kentucky Humane Society's Main Campus in South Louisville.
Our veterinarian team immediately went to work: the seven-week-old Shepherd mixes received medical examinations, food, water, baths and of course a warm, soft place to rest. We alerted the authorities so they could investigate this heartless act. In honor of the man who saved them, the little brown puppy was named Gregory. We named the black puppy Samson. After a week of care, the puppies are now ready for adoption. If you are interested in learning how to adopt either of these puppies, visit www.kyhumane.org/samson-gregory.
While there has been tremendous interest in Gregory and Samson, we remind people that there are many wonderful puppies, dogs, kittens and cats looking for their forever homes at the Kentucky Humane Society and other local shelters and rescues. KHS receives new animals every day of the week. Within the next two weeks, KHS is expecting over 30 puppies from other shelters who will be looking for families to love them. Our hope is that Gregory and Samson help other animals find wonderful families too.
