Down and Nerdy: International Towel Day and Janelle Monae

Briana's pick: Towel Day!

According to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a towel is “about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have” not only because of its “great practical use” but also for its “immense psychological value.” I won’t go into the details, but if you would like to know a little bit more about the towel and its place in the universe please click here to read on.

Let’s not kid ourselves, The Hitchhiker’s Guide…is possibly the greatest book ever written—well top 5 anyway. And if you’ve never read anything by Douglas Adams then you should be ashamed of yourself. Honestly. Pick up a copy, ASAP, put yourself in a corner and read. In fact, read the whole series. It’s not too late for you to turn your life around.

For those of us who are already fans, May 25th marks Towel Day. On this day, fans of Douglas Adams everywhere carry a towel as a symbolic celebration of Adams and his brilliant works. Any towel will do. Check www.towelday.org for global Towel Day events. Then get out there and celebrate! You never know when the Earth will be demolished to make way for a hyperspatial express route. Just sayin’.

James' pick: Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae is from Mars. Mars in the future, where robots have cross-bred with humans to create super-intelligent girls that can dance like nothing humanity has ever seen.

I am totally, 100 percent obsessed with the music of Janelle Monae. Today, her full-length debut record "The Archandroid" comes out. The story concerns our android protagonist Cindi Mayweather, who is slated to be disassembled because she has committed the crime of falling in love with a human.

Yeah, I've talked enough already. Discover her – she is truly like nothing else:
