The week before Halloween.  Let me just go ahead and play this one out, since I know this story well.  I'll talk about what to wear for a few of the parties that I'll be attending... right up until the day of, which means I'll never actually decide on a costume till the last minute.  At that point, I'll hit the closet and come up with some weird concoction that doesn't exactly makes sense, but confuses everyone enough for them to forget that it doesn't make sense and that I totally copped out.  Luckily, I have a lot of hats.  Seriously, like I have hats like girls have shoes.  All different kinds.   So, we'll see how this all turns out.  To be continued...?

On to the show.  Just push play.

Spiral Beach – Domino

Here’s a great one to rock to.  The guitar riff is reminiscent of The Munster’s theme song, which a gritty surf guitar feel and a great sing-along chorus.  And I can vouch for the the album as well, as a fun ride through plenty of textures.  Pick up The Only Real Thing now and forget about the impending coldness outside.

Herman Dune – Baby Baby You’re my Baby

From the new Don’t Lie About Me EP, this great little throwback has been stuck in my head all week.  Apparently, the group use to be made up of two brothers, but one dropped out, the band found its pop, and now we get these (sugary) sweet tunes.   Also notable, they were also the backing band for Julie Dorion and will accompany her on tour as well this winter.

Anders Ponders – Slowest Motion Miracle

It’s epic while staying subtle and bound for an upcoming indie movie (if not, then you’re missing a golden opportunity, soundtrack-making person.)  The strings and horns carry the song while Anders lays a perfect group of words over.  I haven’t heard the full length, Nodes of Overtonesyet, but I’m definitely interested.

Julie The Band - Foggin Up A Clear View

A good rock song isn’t what I expected from the opening bells n’ whistles, but it definitely takes off, and with just enough creativity to keep this song from falling into the usual traps from an otherwise worn genre.  The new CD is called Act of Communication is out now.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix)

I was surprised to see this remix pop up, and become so popular, since It’s Blitz was released nearly six months ago.  Regardless, it takes the already danceable single and throws it further into the fire. The version featured here is really only half of the remix, which usually lasts well over seven minutes, and while its fun, I’d like to fit as many songs in as possible for the hour.  Still worth putting that chrome and leather on.

The Aliens – Sunlamp Show

If you’ve missing needing a Beta Band fix, look no further.  After listening to this track, if you’re left with the filling that Beta should probably sue them, then rest assured that its okay.  This is actually a few of the members in their new project.  But its not all paved road for the Beta kids.  They take the sound they were once known for up a notch in both hooks and adventure.  Have fun, especially, with the transition a little past the 2:30 mark.

Little Dragon – Blinking Pigs

“Beats and laser squiggles.”  That’s a Stereogum quote that I’m enjoying.  It starts out as a Joy Division tribute, before the sultry Yukimi Nagano arrives for the vocals, taking this is a decently pleasurable direction, mixing the best of pop into otherwise dark undertones though several other artists have attempted lately, but none quite hit it like Little Dragon.

Lissie – Little Lovin’

A nice dose of Americana is welcome in a time when it seems the internet is a permanent disco.  Lissie has a beautiful voice and you’ll find yourself singing along with the chorus of “I got a lot of love in my heart.”  It looks cheesy on paper, but fits so well.  Lissie has a new EP called Why You Runnin’ out on Fat Possum Nov. 10 th.

LCD Soundsystem – Bye Bye Bayou

Yaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!  I had been really wanting a new LCD Soundsystem tune for a bit now, and while this may not be the big return – it’s a one off single, a cover of an Alan Vega tune – its still nice to here James McMurphy back on the mic.  Even with its 7 minutes of few changes, its still somewhat mesmerizing.  Grab it anywhere online.

Spring Tigers – New Improved Formula

A decent rock song that keeps the energy driven throughout.  They come from a long line of good Athens, GA bands and so far prove their point, though recent reviews have hit them for being a bit too “all over the map” with their sound.  We’ll see…

Doveman – Angel’s Share

Maybe I’m a sucker for a song with this title (Tim Krekel’s tune of the same name may be one of those Jeff Buckley – Hallelujia style best of’s), but this is an absolutely gorgeous song.  Doveman – who’s real name is Thomas Bartlett – is no stranger to success.  He’s been known to collaborate with The National, The Swell Season, and many, many others (including Louisville favorite Ray Rizzo).

Ravens & Chimes – Hearts of Palm

It may be typical indie fare, but it’s well done and memorable from the get-go.  Sometimes its not about reinventing the wheel, just making a better wheel.  The band recently hit up CMJ, which should give them a nice nudge toward wider recognition.

That Ghost – The Red Bow

This week’s big lo-fi champion.  I will say I like it better than the others of late.  There something about it that almost plays more into the 60’s garage feel of 13 th Floor Elevators, rather than the indecipherable bedroom made wreckage of his peers.  But not totally falling out of line, you can grab it on seven inch now.

Ellie Goulding – Under The Sheets

One more dance cut from the land of Disco Forever (aka, the internet).  Ellie has a decent thing going on and if more top 40 artists went this direction, I would be able to handle if a bit better.  This is Ellie’s debut single, done is a partnership with her producer Starsmith.  Grab it on Nov. 9 th.
