The Weekly Feed 10/19

You'll never lose the beat if you just keep clapping your hands.

Though I've seen enough concerts and out-of-time clap-alongs to know that's not really true, I'm sure the guys in Fruit Bats meant well by that lyric and it stands out enough to put a smile on my face every time it plays.  It's playing on the radio behind me as our hosting station, WFPK, charges through our Fall fund drive.  It's always exciting to hear people give back and share their thoughts and musings about what radio means to them these days.  I've had a couple handfuls of great comments from folks who check out the show each week, so I wanted to say thanks.  I'll keep killing my eyesight rummaging through the blogs so you don't have to.    Really, it's not problem.

Aside from that, I'd also like to officially welcome a few new folks:  KSJE in Farmington, NM and WXRY in Columbia, SC who have both picked up The Weekly Feed.  Thrilled to be a part of your community.

Now, on to the music!

Sprenjuhollin – Worry Til Spring

A bouncy little, acoustic tune from Iceland’s latest import.  Though you won’t get it from this song, the rest of the album features some of their native language, and dips into territories that were blazed from their countrymen like Sigur Rose and Bjork.  That’s all fine and good, but I’d love to hear more like this song.

Charlotte Gainsborg – IRM

A welcome return from the French chanteuses who’s been relatively quiet since her 2006 5:55 album.  The daughter of Serge, who also has a deep actor’s career, finds herself in a collaboration with Beck this time around.  Well, collaboration may be an overstatement.  In all actuality, Beck co-wrote the music, lyrics, produced, mixed, and engineered.  Now, with that said, this is Charlotte’s record.  It’s her voice and her feel, and so far it’s pretty exciting to hear what these two great minds meld into.

Think About Life – Johanna

Great dance-funk-dance from a Canadian trio on their sophomore outing.  They’ve released a pair of tracks to the web that’s caused quite a party, but if you look a little harder you’ll be able to find the full disc since it’s been out in Canada since May.  Stateside, you can expect it in this week.

Chromeo – Night By Night (Skream Remix)

The original version that we played a couple weeks back has been on repeat near-nonstop, and given the style, I wasn’t the least bit surprised to see a remix already making the rounds.  I still prefer the original much more, but this is a decent tinker.  And when its all said and done, I’m sure we’ll see another worthy handful pop up.

Thom Yorke – Hearing Damage

New music from the dude who’s put out quite a bit of new music this year (and (!!!) we’re told to expect a new Radiohead album next year).  This track comes from the new Twilight: New Moon soundtrack and while most of what Thom has let out lately hasn’t been the most accessible, this comes a bit closer.  And while the shock may still there that Thom is a part of this collection, one must only remember that one of Radiohead’s greatest songs came from the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack.

Phantogram – When I’m Small

The resurgence of trip hop has been a welcome surprise.  The XX may be getting all of the attention right now, but its only a matter of weeks before you start hearing about a few more that have been doing it well for the past few years, much like Phantogram here.  A duo from Saratoga Springs, NY, they’ve just signed to Barsuk records (the folks who made Death Cab famous) and pull out their disc Eyelid Movies in February.

Chasing Kings – Dark Sunglasses

This one was a last minute find thanks to I Guess I’m Floating who did a pretty swell write-up on the little known L.A. quartet.  Apparently, the oldest member is 21 though they’ve still been playing together for about eight years.  This track comes from their most recent EP, The Current State of Our Future, and has me intrigued to hear more.  Worth it for the fun guitar line if nothing else.

Local Natives – Wide Eyes

Local Natives have slowly made a good name for themselves over the past year.  This latest track was given as an exclusive to My Old Kentucky Blog to help get the word out on their new disc, Gorilla Manor, which as of yet doesn’t look to have an American release date, so… all the more reason to grab this track if you like.  Feels a bit Doves-ish at times, a bit Starsailor, but with the nu-indie slant, and much cooler than either of those two.

Frankie Rose – Thee Only One

Ex Vivian Girl doing her usual lo-fi, music-louder-than-words  Its fine, but not really my cup.

Mayer Hawthorne – Green Eyed Love (Classixx Remix)

Mayer is the latest white soul king.  The original version closes out his latest disc A Strange Arrangement.  Not my favorite track off the disc, but it’s okay.  The remix coincides with a new video for the song, finding Hawthorne having some hallucinatory fun with a bottle of Absinthe.  I’ve had the same brand that he’s drinking in the video.  It’s the one that’s legal in the U.S. that’s sold out of a New York spot, which makes it way less dangerous and cool.

Jemina Pearl – Looking For Trouble

The latest version of Joan Jett, and doing a pretty good job at it.  Her first single as a solo artist (she’s the former leader of Be Your Own Pet), found her dueting with Iggy Pop (I Hate People), and just this week she beat up an audience member after he flicked a cigarette at her.  Needless to say, when she sings “I’m looking for trouble,” she’s to be believed.  And feared.

El Perro Del Mar – Change of Heart

The name that Swedish femme Sarah Assbring goes under, this newest single features a nice bassline that drives the song throughout, while Sarah floats carefree above.  Its from her fourth disc since 2005, Love Is Not Pop, that was released earlier in the summer but has just now started to get some good traction.  And while it’s not part of the trip-hop club, it’ll play well back-to-back.

Phoenix – Rome (Neighbors Remix f/t Devandra Barnhart)

Last week you got the Animal Collective remix for “Love Like A Sunset” off Phoenix’s forthcoming remix disc featuring songs from their fantastic Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix disc.  This is another track, but personally is much less thrilling.  It does cut the track down to a pretty basic and dream state, so points for adding a new element, but it’s not doing it for me.

CAN’T – Ghosts

Grizzly Bears multi-instrumentalist/bassist who has also produced all of their last three records, co-produced the Dirty Projectors and Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, and started his own record label, Terrible Records, now has come out with his debut solo track.  Because that’s all that was left to do.  I guess if you’re a BIG fan of Grizzly Bear you might get into this, but it feels like one of bands throwaway tracks to me.  Regardless, you can grab it on 7-inch back with an unreleased Arthur Russell song.
