The moon landing is the first national event I remember clearly. I was 4 years old and like everyone I thought it was cool seeing those fellows in space suits floating around in their rockets. Of course, I was too young to understand the historic importance of the event. But I remember it mostly because of Television. My Mom NEVER watched TV during the day. Once Captain Kangaroo went off at 9am, our one black & white TV stayed off until the NBC nightly News came on.
The one exception to this was when we had men out in space - then the TV stayed on all day. This told my 4 year old brain that something special was going on. My Dad hated Walter Cronkite but Mom liked his coverage of the Moon shots, so the only time I saw 'Uncle Walty' was during these times. His excitement for the space program was obvious even to me. I'll always associate the late Walter Cronkite with those amazing days in July 1969. The photo of me was taken the morning of the day we landed on the moon - watching TV and history being made.
