John Yarmuth Cruises to Victory

Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth has won re-election by 30 percentage points over Republican challenger Brooks Wicker in the Third Congressional District race.Wicker had struggled throughout the race to raise money for the campaign and didn’t run any TV ads. The race was never considered close, and observers argue the wide margin this year makes Yarmuth tougher to beat in future elections.Yarmuth says he hopes the message of the race is that he listens to constituents but is able to explain how policies in Washington affect their lives.“All I’ve done over the last six years is to make sure that people understand that I am willing to listen to them and understand the challenge everybody faces and respond in terms of policy in Washington,” he said.Yarmuth says Congress faces some big challenges in the coming months, including the fiscal cliff. When he starts his new term in January, Yarmuth will be the only Democrat in Kentucky’s federal delegation. In Kentucky’s Third Congressional District race, Democrat John Yarmuth has defeated Republican Brooks Wicker by 30 points. WFPL’s Phillip Bailey reports.Yarmuth won in a landslide victory, but Republicans will retain control of the House and the gridlock in Congress could continue.Yarmuth says the country faces some serious challenges in the coming months that lawmakers need to overcome, but that the GOP will have to learn to compromise.“Democrats have been willing to compromise and purse middle of the road policies to solving our problems and we’ve given on a number of areas," he said. "People in my district understand that and I hope that people across the country understand that it’s the Republicans in Congress that have not been willing to compromise once inch on anything."Fellow Democrat Ben Chandler lost his re-election bid, making Yarmuth the only Democrat in Kentucky’s federal delegation.
