John Adams's "On the Transmigration of Souls" was premiered on September 19, 2002, by the New York Philharmonic under Lorin Maazel. A musical commemoration of 9/11/2001, the work won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize. The composition uses recorded voices reading the names of victims of the terrorist attacks and messages left at the sites after the events, combined with choruses and orchestra. Adams wanted to avoid referring to the work as a requiem or memorial. In an interview he stated, "I'd probably call the piece a 'memory space. It's a place where you can go and be alone with your thoughts and emotions."
